For Expo 2020 Australian Pavilion, the concept derives from the relation of the body and the mind. The adaptation ability of humans is reflected on building in its two systems, first one being the skins transformation under heat through sweating process by opening its pores. Considering the mimesis the buildings facade is the skin of its body, the facade is designed through panels which could respond to heat. Following the work of Doris Kim Sung, the thermo bi-metals which show diverse bending characteristics under heat serve as the base concept for the adaptive skin to create a zero energy building, along with the thin film solar panel additions. This way when the pavilion is under heat, the thermo bi-metal system reacts and starts bending with the solar cells, maximizing the efficiency and creating shading on the body of the building.

Australian culture inspires the design and form of the building under three main topics; nature, history and landscape. In terms of nature the fauna and flora is taken into account and the Australian lizard influences the concept of the adaptive skin. The circular aboriginal sign for meeting place and gathering is the referral with the history of the nation which shapes the building outline, and considering the rocky landscape of the Australian deserts, the famous Wave Rock in Hyden gives the form to the building.

The concentric design of the pavilion creates a circular movement, having the exhibition area as the outer ring and the interactive exhibition area as the core space. Once entered to the pavilion from the northern side, three tour options are given to the visitor, combining the general exhibition space, central maze and the upper floor with the restaurant. Maintenance room, staff room and services are kept on this floor yet isolated from the exhibition area to direct and minimize the crowd.
