Located in an isolated, beautiful bay on the Kapıdag Peninsula in Turkey, the ‘Mare Nostrum’ project derives its name from the album of iconic Italian jazz figure Paolo Fresu and focuses on the conceptual poetics between sea and human experience. It aims to transform the boathouse’s roof into a multifunctional terrace usable at all times of day, optimizing the usage of this area within the private villa. This transformation creates spectacular moments amid the crystal-clear waters, magnificent sunset views, and starry summer nights.
The space is divided into two zones: the kitchenette/bar area and the open space area. Numerous activities are possible here, including sunbathing, happy hour gatherings, open-air lounging, barbecue dinners, open-air cinema screenings, karaoke nights, and various other summer activities that amplify the joy of this space.
The region’s identity finds expression through the project’s materials. Aegean colors of blue and white adorn the furniture, while concrete flooring and bamboo coverings complete the material palette. Repurposed wine house pallets serve as movable furniture, ensuring necessary spatial flexibility. Custom-made pillows and cushions atop these pallets create a comfortable seating lounge, while their vertical arrangement establishes the bar area. The bamboo covering provides shade over the bar and kitchenette, which includes amenities such as a small oven, sink, and minibar. Wardrobe doors, hung with sailing ropes, open vertically; when closed, they serve as storage space during the night or off-season periods.
